Working out in the thick of life

I hate working out. Not like, it’s the worst thing I have ever done, but like…. having to scrub the toilet. It has to be done but I don’t love it. However, it is so, so, so good for you and something that is recommended for all people. But it doesn’t come naturally to me… in fact, this is me post workout.

So, when I am stressed, tired, and grumpy, how do I motivate myself to make it to the gym?

One – find something you like. Or at least don’t hate. I enjoy Spin classes and yoga significantly more than anything else, so I don’t mind going. In fact, sometimes I even like how I feel afterwards.

BUT… this does mean you have to push yourself outside of your comfort zone and try new things. Overcoming a fear of trying new things is essential.

Find some motivational item or trick. Mine is fun, gym clothes. I love bright colors, patterns, and shopping. Plus, I love wearing new outfits. Investing in gym clothes keeps me working out.

Consider focusing on health and not weight loss. Diet is 80% of weight loss, while exercise is 20%. If you are only working out to lose weight, you are likely to become frustrated. However, if you can switch your perspective to thing about how much healthier your heart is getting, your lungs expanding, muscles and bones gaining in strength. Any weight loss is a bonus after all that, right?
