The lovely thing about reading is that there is always something lovely and new to delight you. You will remember that last month was a crap month for reading, but this month more than made up for it. I read some truly wonderful texts in March.
My Sister, Guard Your Veil; My Brother, Guard Your Eyes: Uncensored Iranian Voices edited by Lila Azam Zanganen. I grabbed this book because I have a particular interest in Iran culture since my brother-in-law’s partner has an Iranian heritage and I am always interested in learning more about that culture. Plus, I saw that one of the authors was Marjane Satrai, who is an author I was interested in reading more of. It was wonderful. Truly enlightening and well written collection of short pieces. I highly recommend picking it up at your local library.
The Foster Parenting Manual: A Practical Guide to Creating a Loving, Safe and Stable Home by John DeGarmo is a solid introduction to foster parenting but has nothing new to offer if you have already been researching foster care. Good intro text, however.
Planetary, Volume 2: The Fourth Man by Warren Ellis. I read the first compilation in January, but wasn’t impressed. That said, I really liked this one and have ordered the next two volumes from my local library.
Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic by Sam Quinones. This book is AMAZING. It intersects the rise of opiod prescriptions with the heroin epidemic. It is a fascinating story that was far more complex and integrated than I was aware of. Again, PICK IT UP.
It was a great month of reading. What did you guys read this month?
I just finished Dreamland, I’ve read a lot about the opioid epidemic and live in a town that’s felt the effects, but it was still so enlightening. And terrible- like a perfect storm of deprivation and greed that made our culture vulnerable.
